Mesopotamia Meets the Arctic

Genres: Mesopotamian folk / Electronic fusion

Mosaicpotamia is a musical exploration of memory, place and cultural connection. Led by musician and composer Mazlum Karataş, the project draws on the rich traditions of Mesopotamia while embracing contemporary electronic expression, live sampling and improvisation.

With more than fifteen years of experience across diverse musical settings, Karataş has become a familiar figure on Tromsø’s music scene through projects such as Tesi and Tromsø for Palestina Band. Through Mosaicpotamia, he creates a meeting point between ancient melodies, traditional modes and modern sound design — allowing centuries-old musical traditions to resonate in new and unexpected ways.

Joining him is pianist and songwriter Stine Maren Steien, a well-known presence in Northern Norway through her work with Lisa Skoglund, the Midnight Concerts and her own solo project. Rooted in the Bardu dialect and inspired by Norwegian folk traditions, soul and singer-songwriter music, Steien brings a distinctive sensitivity and atmosphere to the collaboration.

Together, they create a musical dialogue between regions, languages and histories. Electronic textures, piano, traditional melodies and improvisation unfold into contemplative soundscapes where Mesopotamian and Nordic traditions meet as equals.

Following a memorable appearance at Tromsø World in 2025, Mosaicpotamia returns to the festival with a new chapter in its ongoing exploration of heritage, storytelling and sonic transformation.
